Why does my wireless network drop

There are cases in which a wireless network that includes a router is encountering connection problems. The most probable scenario is when the connection to the router is dropped every a couple of minutes. This usually occurs when you are online, and suddenly the wireless network connection drops. When offline, the refresh is not as visible because the data sent and received is not constant.

This is not only a windows vista related problem, as it can happen to anyone with a laptop that has installed any various above windows xp service pack 2. The wireless networking simply drops every once is a while for no obvious reason, just like some on would be turning it off and then back on, when there’s actually no such action. There are several reasons for which this can happen.

If you are using an usb adapter to receive the wireless signal, this happens often when the usb drivers are encountering an error. In other cases, it has something to do with the laptop’s power management system. If this setting is left at a complete mobile level, then any pause in activity, for as less as 1 or 2 minutes can reset the wireless connection just because the laptop enters stand by mode.

Other times, this happens because the wireless signal gets so low that it is lost and windows needs to perform another wireless check to see if there is any other stronger signals available coming from other near wireless routers.

There are a few things that can be done to ensure the longer connectivity of your laptop. First of all, enter device manager and make sure all related hardware devices are properly installed and that there is no conflict. If there’s a problem with a component’s driver, that component should show a warning icon with an exclamation mark before its name in the list.

If this is the problem, try to locate the appropriate drivers on the internet and after installing them, check again to see if the network is working. Some earlier xp and vista versions do not have appropriate drivers or internal wireless cards or for usb adapter and an update might be necessary.

Make sure the laptop is not set to enter stand by too soon. If you plan on leaving something to download while you attend other tasks away from it, you might encounter a wireless drop while you are away if the laptop enters stand by mode.
Also, check the router and make sure it allows external connection from the port you are trying to connect to. Some routers have enabled protection features that can even kick new connections every now and then because they are considered to be unsafe.
