What is the definition of wifi

A wireless network is a term used for local area networks that connect to the internet by accessing a wi-fi protected access point or wifi hotspots, using wireless technology. This means they have included or external wireless connection cards and antennas, that allow them to communicate with the wi-fi networks and all subsequent operating systems with being physically wired to them. The spider web of a network becomes invisible, as it is provided by a signal sent though air, and not through connection cables, as it is done in wired networks.

Most wireless networks use IEEE 802.11 standards, which are signal encryption methods. The signal is send out on frequencies that are usually located on the 2.4 GHz band. With this broadband wireless technology you can access both wireless LAN locations and internet locations.

The benefits of such a network are obvious, but it has a few setbacks. In case of wired networks, there are no range issues, no data loss problems and no frequency interferences cases. But the wireless network does present all these problems, and the range of the wireless system can encounter interferences from various other devices using similar band frequencies. People that connect to a wifi hotspot need to install additional security encryptions, because wireless networks are more susceptible to hacker attacks that the wired ones.

This is why you home network must at all times be password protected. If not, anyone passing your location can access it and after that person successfully connects, all you personal data are at risk. Other devices that connect to a wireless network will decrease the total wireless capacity, especially if they are using you internet broadband. This is why sometimes download problems are encountered by people that do not take the wireless security seriously.

Wifi systems provide endless applications and just as many business opportunities. There are people who actually use their home wireless network to make money, by creating a shared hotspot which people in the vicinity can connect to and then access the internet. There are several types of billing programs for those that connect to a certain hot spot, and small entrepreneurs use this opportunity while it’s still at large.

Wifi is in fact a term used to describe the WLAN networks (which means the local area networks that are using wireless methods to connect). It comes from shortening the words “Wireless” and “fidelity” and has been lately used instead of the term wireless directly, but it actually signifies the next step in wireless technology. Wifi is not only a computer characteristic. There are many other devices that use the wireless fidelity to connect to the internet as cell phones, Pdas, GPS devices. All this equipments have enclosed wifi receivers that can capture the signal from virtually anywhere, as long as it’s available.
