Laptop cannot see wireless network
When your windows xp laptop doesn’t see wireless network, there are several things for which this might be happening. First of all, if a new laptop can’t find wireless networks at all, then just make sure the wireless button is pressed, so that the wireless possibility is available. Then check the windows firewall setting and make sure the firewall isn’t the one blocking the signal. It is best to turn off the firewall until you have been successfully connected at least once to the network, and then add the ips and devices you are going to communicate with to the firewall exception list, located in xp’s firewall security settings, and then you can enable it again.
The laptop’s internal wi-fi card will automatically connect to any available wi-fi network in range. Of there’s no preferred network, it will chose the one with the strongest signal. Sometimes you might realize that your laptop can not find the wireless network connection in your home, but instead you are connected to another free wireless hot spot in the area.
If this happens, it means that there’s nothing wrong with the laptop’s settings, since it can connect through the wireless port without a problem to another network. Check the Wireless Network Connection by double clicking it’s icon in the taskbar and see the name of the network you are connected to.
If this is not your home network, disconnect and make sure automatic connection is not enabled for that network. If it is, change it to manual. Then locate you home network in the list, and make it the preferred network connecting. If you can not see your wireless network at all, check the router’s antenna and signal strength and also make sure it has an enabled wireless function. The networking settings should not disallow external connections. If needed, allow access to guest connecting.
You can also try and install the router’s driver again, and see if the problem persists. Also, in the router’s config setting, try to change ssid values and also connection ports, Try to access the wireless network from another device. Maybe the router has a hardware problem.
If some other laptop can connect wirelessly to the router, then there’s an incompatibility issue. If the main computer in the network has windows vista or mac os, you need to make sure that each and every one of these network settings are the same, because if left to default they will result in gaining different values: assigned ip addresses, ssid, encryption methods wpa wep, usernames and passwords, domain names, workgroups.
Again, whenever making any changes on the xp laptop make sure the firewall is turned off so the networking changes are accepted. Also, try restarting it before attempting to connect again.
