How To Tell If Someone Is Connected To My Wireless Network
Having a wireless network offers you plenty of great benefits. However, it can also be something that other people are benefiting from as well. That’s right, someone else may be connected to your wifi network. This isn’t something that sits well with most people though. After all, they are paying for it and someone else is also reaping the rewards from that. The last thing I would want is somebody getting a connection to my access point and then getting free Internet.
It is possible though to find out if someone is connected to your network. There is a solution to download software that can help you to monitor what’s going on.You may not think it is a big deal but there are some problems with it. First, it is just a matter of ethics. If they will steal this from you will they go as far as to hack into your computer and access personal information? Will they end up putting spyware or viruses on your computer that are difficult to get rid of?
The first step is to open up your browser and to enter the IP address of your computer. Once this opens up for you enter your password and user name for the router. You will find that different types of routers have different default information that you may need to put in as well. You can find that specific information online but most of them are going to use Admin and the password would be blank.
From that default you can go in and then change the password so that it is more secure. This way other people can’t gain access to your wireless network by guessing that default password or by looking it up. To help prevent others from accessing your wlan, you want to make it more secure with a password.
However, that can also give you a false sense of security. There are many programs out there that help people to unlock passwords. So if they are determined to gain access to the wi-fi network you have in place this won’t stop them. This is why you also want to have a way to find out if someone is accessing it or not.
To find out who is specifically who is connected to your wireless network, go to the set up tab. Scroll down to where it says DHCP server and see if it is enabled. You will see tabs that say status and you want to click that. From there go to DHCP clients table. This is going to give you information on everyone connected to that wireless network. You can further increase security by using encryption, you will need to look at your router configuration which will explain how to set up wep. Another alternative is to only allow certain MAC address to connect. If you are using a Windows laptop or PC you can usually find the MAC address of your network card in the control panel area.
Make sure you have a good firewall in place too. This will help to reduce the access people can gain to it. However, many people are extremely good at finding out how to get into someone’s wireless network. This is why you want to routinely engage in the above steps to find out who has been connected to it.
