How to increase wi-fi reception

How to increase my laptop’s wireless reception? How to boost the laptop’s signal for networking & wireless performances? These are the questions on the lips of every laptop owner because laptops do not do an incredible wireless job usually. They always seem to disconnect from wifi networks and then when they connect back the signal seems somewhat lost. Sometimes the downloading speed is decreasing for no obvious reason and other times the connection seems impossible.

If you are getting a poor or moderate wifi reception from your laptop, then there are a couple of things that can cause this situation, and each of them can be easily fixed with the adding of new wireless network devices that can improve and boost the signal strength. The laptop’s wireless card might not receive a good signal from certain points in your house because they are in fact out of the wireless router’s range. Every wireless device has a certain range that applies to its performances and it mainly depends on the wireless channels used, in the frequency as 802.11b/g that new routers use, and on the type of wifi antenna.

Sometimes, certain electronic or radio devices that are using the same frequency as the router can produce a serious interference and cause a decrease in signal. Other times, the antennas on your wireless devices do not provide a good signal boosting or reception, because they are outdated or way too used. Other times things as simple as brick or concrete walls can affect the signal quality and range. Indoors, the things that interfere with the signal are the ones that cause you to encounter difficulties when you are trying to connect to the network from your laptop.

An immediate solution is to change the router’s antenna. You should try to purchase one that is bigger and can provide better range, but that also fits into the router’s antenna holder. If this isn’t working for you, and the signal is still not string enough, and it will often happened this way if we are talking about indoor propagation through several levels or rooms, then you should consider buying a network expander, or even more.

If your computer room is situated in the corner of the house, on the first floor, then you will probably get wireless coverage in most surrounding and above rooms, but not in the other half of the house. You need to add a new access point at the entrance in the computer room and you can also place a network repeater at the bottom of the central staircase. This way the coverage can be obtained for greater distances, and it usually solves the wifi connection problems people have to deal with in a normal sized home.
