How To Create A Wired And Wireless Network
It is possible to create both a wired and a wireless network. In fact, if you have both a laptop and a desktop at home or in the office that you use this is exactly the type of set up you want to have. This can allow two users to access information on different computers at the same time. In some households this is going to eliminate lots of stress and lots of fighting due to not everyone waiting for their turn with the computer.
I have worked in a number of companies where the networking department has both of these types of configurations in place. From a security point of view they have to make sure that everybody that is connected to the WiFi is using encryption and possibly even the MAC address of their network card has been settled on the wireless network. This hardware is easy to settle and all they do is connect and Ethernet cable from the wi-fi router back to a main switch, which then makes sure it’s sitting on the LAN. All the routing is stem cell so the user has no configuration to change and no need to poke in cables as we were able to walk around the office plugged into a network point that if required using a Cat-5 cable or simply use the wlan network.
It can also become an issue when you have one type of programming on your home computer and something else on the laptop. Perhaps at work you must use Windows Vista but at home you have Windows XP. So taking home the laptop allows you to transfer files and to get access to all you need for work while at home.
There will be some equipment you need to purchase in order to operate a successful wired and wireless network. Take a good assessment of your needs first though so you can get your hands on what is best for you to work with. Where do you plan to have the various network devices located? You need to know the distance for them so you can get the right materials.
With each of the networks have their own internet access or is that going to be shared? Most of the time it is going to be shared. Also if you are talking about one each of these types of set ups then that is very different than if you have two wired and two wireless in mind. You are going to need a router that allows enough ports for all of your devices to be plugged into it.
Next you will need to access the Network Connections on all of the computers involved, but one at a time of course. Choose Create a Small Home or Office Network from the options there. There is a wizard that will come on and walk you through the entire process. Keep in mind as you do this for each computer that you want to offer the same workgroup name for each of them. However, you want to give each one a different computer name. Make sure you keep track of what you name each one too.
This process is going to make sure the computers are on the same shared network. Keep in mind that the signal strength you get from them may by different due to one being wired and one being wireless. Generally if one of them is weaker then it will be the wireless connection. You may need to but an antenna for it to give you additional boosting power.
