How do I secure my Linksys Wireless Network
If you have a Linksys wireless router, you might be wondering how to secure your laptop since the linksys router is known to be a bit more vulnerable to attacks than other similar networking devices. The incoming wireless laptop signal through linksys router can be easier detected and hacked into by people willing to crack wireless networks or simply to access the internet connection.
While it’s quite clear that is you have not set the wireless b router security you will be quite open to attacks, you should know that even if the access point is protected by a username and a password this doesn’t mean that certain software programs that have been developed by technology professionals can not brake in. Most people leave the router’s security settings unchanged.
This means that anyone that knows the standard ip address for a Linksys router can actually connect to the router using that password set by the manufacturer, which is often simply “admin”. You need to offer additional security to your computer by adding a web encryption and accessing the router’s config. Here you can set the internet connection port, solve any problem that might’ve appeared with your connection by changing ssid or wpa, encryptions methods or by installing additional ip addresses designated just for your LAN network.
Securing a Linksys network begins with adding some extra software features to the router’s initial security. Dig deeper into settings, and after you’ve managed to change the connection port you should try to limit computer access to the router. This can be also done from windows or by hardware recognition, which would make only the current computers able to connect to the router and therefore the network.
If at some point there’s a problem with the broadcast of the wireless transmission, or if the connectivity is seriously reduced and the download speed is also decreasing at certain moments during the day, it might mean that in those moments someone else is currently connected to the network. You can easily detect the ips of people that are connecting to your router from the routers config setting, or from windows, clicking the View Entire Network tab. The next step is to manually block that person’s laptop ip, by adding it to the Windows firewall restricted ips.
If you do this, there will be no more connecting from that ip and the person will get automatically kicked from the network. Furthermore, you can change the wireless network’s password every two days, so that those who manage to hack into it will not have enough time to store and release your password farther. Avoid sharing personal file on the network, and if you share documents make sure they are also password protected.
