Download problems with wireless network
Whenever you are trying to download a big file using a wireless network you might encounter serious trouble because sometimes the network connection keeps on failing, every 5 minutes. In some cases, especially when you are connected from a computer that is using Windows Xp operating system and the access point is a router, the wireless connection might refresh every once in a wile especially if the network performance settings have not been modified in the router’s network setup. If the connection is secure, then the wireless card on the laptop will not constantly refresh the connection.
With other operating systems like Windows Vista and Mac OS, there’s a serious compatibility issue between the wireless adapters used by both. If you really want to connect the two operating systems then you would have to dig in a bit further in the wireless network’s setting and then test the configuration of the network card on both. They should work using the 802.11g networking encryption protocol. The 802.11a or b raise serious compatibility problems and therefore will result in decreased download speeds.
In case are using a wireless mini pci adapter, then you have to access the network setup for wireless networks and make sure that the wireless LAN network has a good communication with the router. Make sure you have installed the right software driver for your LAN card and that you have also configured the ssid on both devices. There might appear networking issues with the router is the ssid is not set at same values on both. You can test the downloads by trying first to copy something from one device to the other. In general, this should not take too long and if it does, then there’s clearly something wrong with the communication between the two or more hardware devices you have connected on the network.
Security is sometimes a problem that causes the wireless card to refresh the connection. It’s best to connect over a secure network. If the network is not secured, then you are practically opening a wifi channel to other computers that might be in the area. In this case, if the download speed is seriously decreasing at some point then it means that someone else is connected to the web using your connection.
Other times, the downloading speed might be influenced by the fact that you are not in the router range. Wireless networks decrease in signal strength if there are interferences and also if the distance increases. In this case, you can use a network extender to increase the wireless range. When a signal decrease caused by hardware limitations occurs, placing a central expander somewhere in the middle of the house, not close to walls or windows will do the tick in most cases.
