Boosting Wireless LAN Signals

There are many ways to boots the wireless signal in a Local Area Network. Here I will try to discuss only a few of them, which are the easiest to understand and accomplish. If you are looking to improve the wi-fi signal, then you must have a problem with its current levels. This means it can be too weak for you, and then your router might be the main problem, or the wifi card in your computer, or you are trying to connect from too far away, in which case you should adapt your position or install a network expander.

Here are just a few tips that can aid you in getting a stronger or wider signal from your home network:

1.   Place the router somewhere else. Reconsidering the position of your router is essential in such a case. There might be some interference with the WiFi signal along the way. There are several things that can interfere like other equipments that use radio signals to function, microwaves, cellular phones or wireless landlines. Other things that obstruct the propagation of WiFi signals are house and apartment walls, isolated walls and signal reflecting surfaces.

2.   Change the router’s antenna. There are many cases in which the antenna can not function properly. Either it has been damaged by a fall, or by striking it with a hard object, or it just failed to deliver quality strength in time. Or maybe it doesn’t have enough range to start with. In this case you can choose to buy a new and improved type  that fits on your router. Antennas can be a good solution and you have a quick look on the web you should be able to find some cheap hardware to help.

3.   Add more access points. This is like placing more that one router’s in the same room, but changing their setting so that they do not work as a router. Many wireless routers have the possibility of being used as an access point, but there are also wireless devices that are called Access Points and that can expand the range of the network. This will need to be hardwired back to your main router using cat-5 cable. I have used this solution in the past I have actually works quite well. It can help booster the network if you are having major issues with the getting access because of interference.

4.   Use a wireless repeater. This electronic equipment works both like a signal enhancer and as a signal transmitter. The device captures the signal transmitted by the router, then boosts it and retransmits it to other wireless receivers located around, like notebooks and computers that have wireless cards. It expands the range of a wireless network and also boots the intensity of the signal within the initial borders of the WiFi signal.

There are many other ways of boosting wireless LANs. You could consider simply changing the router or the wireless cards you are using.
