It wasn’t that long ago when most offices would have a separate machine for printing, faxing and scanning. I guess it was only a matter of time before the manufacturers decided to consolidate everything into one machine. It also makes a lot of sense for the average home user who may want to use a scanner and fax machine occasionally.

So what are the advantages of having an all-in-one? I’d say one of the biggest is probably space, as it now requires less now that it takes up less room. The fact that you now only need one cable to connect to the device, or if it’s on a network you on the report was based on your local hub or switch. There is also greater flexibility when it comes to the purchasing cartridges because you are now combining the costs all into one unit.

Everyone will have different needs and priorities when it comes to choosing a printer. Some people will simply on something that they can send information from their computer that will either print or they can send a fax and also allow them to have the option to scan a document at speed. Because of the vast array of printers appear from different manufacturers like HP, Brother, Epson, Canon to name but a few there is always changes in the technology that they use and it’s kind of difficult to keep up with them.

Print speed -this will basically determine how fast the printer can output to a pitch usually determined with something called pages per minute or PPM

Maximum resolution – the better resolution the printer has the better quality printing can be done whether you simply wish to print some photos or are printing high quality spreadsheets.

Memory card compatibility – many printers will now allow you to print directly from them using a memory card. There are a few standards that you will now find on most printers. It should also come with an LCD so you can select and edit what you want to print without the use of a computer.

Scanner resolution – if you are going to be using this to scan in photographs and documents you want to make sure that the quality and resolution is high. Although many people are obviously interested in what the print resolution is this shall not be over looked.

Fax speed – although this may seem an old technology is still used in lots of businesses today. You want to make sure that the fax speed is quite fast as you certainly do not want to hold up your phone line for long.

There are number of things that you also need to consider before you purchase. You need to check out the price of a replacement cartridge what you find is that many manufacturers will sell the multi-function printers quite cheap only to discover at a later stage that cartridges can be quite expensive.

It’s always advised to read a number of reviews before you make any purchase. Always double-check the review and also make sure you check out prices at various stores whether this is off-line or online. The price is obviously key and you need to make sure you are getting the best deal possible for you.
