Just a little bit of background on what Bluetooth is first. It’s basically a wireless communication technology that allows to electronic devices to connect together without the use of using a cable. Initially developed by Toshiba it has now become a standard used by more than two dozen companies to implement and developed a standard platform using specific protocol and specifications.

It works on the 2.4 GHz frequency similar to what you would find on wireless networks. But, will only work over short distance of 10 m so is really designed to work over a short-range only. However, this is where the Bluetooth dongle comes in as it is a simple USB device that can be plugged into your PC USB port.

If you are using Windows it will generally install a generic Windows driver, which will enable you to use the dongle. Sometimes this will not work and when you purchase a new dongle you should automatically driver software to install on your computer. Once this is done you will be able to link to which a mobile phone to your computer. On your phone you should go to the Bluetooth section and in here you’ll be able to search for other Bluetooth devices. Hopefully all going well you can then select that and connect, this is called pairing and is basically you are pairing the two devices with each other to establish an encrypted connection. There may be some security built-in and you may be required to enter the password consult the dongle’s manual if you have any issues.

Once you have established a connection you can then transfer files from your phone to your computer and vice versa. This makes it much easier to transfer photographs, Ringtones, MP3 songs, games and any other files you wish to use all without the use of a cable.

From a security point of view everything should really be safe because this connection only works over a very short distance as we said earlier 10 m. once a transfer is done you can then simply just disconnect and hopefully everything has copied across.

You also find many photo printers now coming with USB ports that allow you to plug in a Bluetooth dongle. This makes it so much easier to get a connection and transfer photographs using this technology. It also saves you having to copy the files to computer and then print it from there being able to connect directly to simply enable you to use your time for other needs.

If you have a laptop without Bluetooth built-in and wish to surf the Internet you can simply use a dongle and Bluetooth to your phone to use this as a data connection to get Internet access. This is a well established format of communications and something that many people have used but really using cables nowadays with the use of this wireless technology that makes it so much simpler and easy to use.

There are many people are now using dongle is on their PC to connect to their Bluetooth headsets. This is especially useful if you make calls using voice over IP or use voice recognition software on your computer. Once you have established a connection is really just a matter of the software being set up to recognize that you are communicating using a Bluetooth adapter. Normally this is automatic and you may not even have to change any settings to get this working.

All in all the advantages of using a Bluetooth dongle are really good. With so many applications in so many uses if you are considering buying one you’ll find that they are not that expensive and easily obtainable from online stores or possibly from you’re local mall.
