There are many reasons why somebody would want to track a phone. One example is if you have the misfortune of losing it I have come across a number of applications that can simply install onto your phone that will help you track if someone else decides to use it.

Essentially once the SIM card is replace it will then send a text message to another phone number and in the details will have the phone number of the person who just placed their current inside the missing phone. A simple phone call to the person who has located your phone may actually help in getting this returned but of course does not guaranteed.

Being able to trace the phone is something that is also used by law enforcement agencies. There are a number of ways they can do this of course but in general this type of information is not available to the general public. They mainly work with network carriers in order to obtain this information. This can be useful for example in missing person cases where they are trying to locate somebody or I’m sure they also use this type of information and trying to locate a serious criminals.

We are also starting to see many applications become available that work with GPS. If you have a group of friends for example who have all set to GPS on their phones you can then track the location of everybody using maps to pinpoint exactly where they are. This is a great application if you are looking to locate friends that maybe out celebrating and you happen to be late and unfortunately cannot remember exactly where you’re going to meet. It’s also a great application for business purposes where a Company could locate the whereabouts of its employees on the road by tracking their phone.

We are starting to see the software applications from the likes of Blackberry, Nokia and Apples iPhone. This is only the beginning of this technology and will be many improvements as we see the benefit of merging GPS and WiFi so that it can improve speed of transmitting data.
