Linux Platform to account for 25% of handset market by 2012
According to Richard Lee country manager, Wind River in Taiwan the Linux OS will grow between 44-70% in the next few years with the possibility to reach 130-200 million handset per year all by 2012. With the expected growth of Smartphones I’m sure it could reach these numbers.
He also noted that at the moment there are 25 companies developing Linux-based application platforms and interface software and of course many other independent software vendors working on various projects.
Other reports expect revenues and profits for manufactures to sustain health growth in 2009 due to an improvement in product mix and increasing shipments of smartphones. With player like Palm, HP and Motorola moving more into the Smartphone market they will all need to run some sort of OS and Linux could be answer for a lot of them.
