Nokia Multiscanner – Translator in your Pocket

This is one really good use of a mobile phone camera, the idea behind Nokia Multiscanner is to provide business card reading and document scanning on the move. And it’s available on the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66.

The next step that the developers are working on is using this same software to translate. Here’s what Nokia have to says about the software…

“After you have taken the photo of the text you want to translate, your mobile identifies the text in the photo and then translates it for you. This process uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to recognize the text and then the application uses language libraries to finds the equivalent word in your language.”

The software requires Language libraries that are stores on the phone, English, French, or Greek for example take up about 600 kilobytes (but now with 16GB microSD cards available this will not be an issue) and they reckon that character-based language, for example Chinese or Japanese, 3 megabytes is required.

I’m sure lots of us will find this really handy when in our local restaurants trying to order from the menu and you’ve no idea what it says. But, I’m also sure we can find lots of really useful way to use this software in the future.
